Information on the prototype:
Until the mid-1950s, engine technology did not allow a mainline diesel locomotive to be built with just one engine and sufficient power. Consequently, the V200 and V200.1 series were created. These were equipped with two propulsion systems in order to fulfill their performance program. However, the manufacturers were working flat out on more powerful engines, and by the end of the decade an output of 1400kW from just one engine was no longer an illusion. As early as 1956, Krupp therefore began developing a medium-heavy mainline diesel locomotive with one motor, steam heating and a top speed of 120 km/h. In 1960, a total of ten pre-series machines were delivered by Krupp and Henschel.
